Ralph W Turner Foundation is an organization that funds minority students; assisting them in achieving excellence in study in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Neuroscience, and Mathematics (STEM) at selected Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
WHO IS DR. RALPH TURNER?
Ralph completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry and mathematics at The Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina where he graduated with honors: Magna Cum Laude. He went on to complete graduate and doctoral studies at the University of Pittsburg in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania where he earned the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Physical Chemistry in 1965. As a newly minted Ph.D he continued nurturing his intellectual curiosity by completing post-doctoral research studies at University of Wisconsin and also at University of South Carolina.
Becoming a Faculty Researcher
Dr. Turner has completed numerous publications including but not limited to the “Crystal and Molecular Structure of Metal Ion-Aromatic Complexes, I ” which was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and The Manual for Physical Science Students at Florida A&M University.
Dr. Turner is also a member of a number of academic societies and professional organizations including The American Chemical Society: The American Crystallographic Association. The American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society, The Research Society of America, The Beta Kappa Chi National Honor Society and The Phi Lambda Upsilon Scientific Honor Society.
A Champion and Leader @ Florida A&M University
Dr. Turner served in multiple administrative and leadership positions during his 50 years at Florida A&M University. Prior to his retirement Dr. Ralph W. Turner, he served as the Dean of the Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Arts and Sciences, the largest college at the university. During his tenure as Dean, he provided governance for personnel, curricula, facilities and all planning matters of the College. He ensured the funding needed to support the college were secured. Ralph loved the world of academia and worked tirelessly to support and create a campus environment that provided intellectual rigor and a diversity of cultural engagement at the university.
A Community Catalyst
Dr. Turner devoted his time away from the university to the Tallahassee community. He became a staunch advocate for voter registration and political awareness. For his untiring efforts, Turner was honored by the Leon County Democratic Executive Committee for his service and commitment. Though he was registered Democrat since 1959, Dr. Turner was a friend and advocate to all and a great believer is given children the gift of a good education.
A Road Well Traveled
Truly, Dr. Turner distinguished himself as a noted researcher, higher administrator and competent advisor to thousands of persons across the country. Dr. Turner lived in Tallahassee, Florida (about 2 miles away from Florida A&M University).
Of the many roles he played in life, his most cherished was that of a father to his only daughter, Shalom Turner of Atlanta, Georgia.
